As part of the Birmingham Police Athletics Teams (P.A.T.) League, Birmingham Bears Basketball Youth Program is a program for student-athletes to become friends as family. The team is coached by MCS volunteer Coach Perkins and practice is held in the school gym which the players refer to as the Bear Cave. Coach Perkins’ goal is to bring the youth together from community to community for future familiarity with kids across the state. He wants to give kids exposure to different atmospheres, environments, and people outside of their neighborhoods and to show them that they are equal to all. Coach Perkins teaches discipline, self-respect, and confidence along with hard work, teamwork, and competitiveness. The team mottos include: hard work pays off, there is strength in numbers, and you get out what you put in. Team slogans are: We all we got! We all we need! We Dem Bears! The Birmingham Bears are currently in their third year. The first year record was 5-7 with a 2nd round playoff loss. The second year record was 8-4 with a Final Four playoff loss.
